Your local Colchester gardeners share their knowledge on the next steps to take in your garden for October.
Autumn is well and truly upon us now, and whilst we’re all enjoying the gorgeous colours the season brings upon us, it’s actually also a great time to start preparing for Spring and protecting your garden in time for Winter!
Read on to discover what we’d recommend doing in your garden this month to keep on top of it.
Preparing perennials
Now is the perfect time to order your bulbs for Spring time, if you start planting them now you’ll have flowers throughout February until March. When planting bulbs, the easiest rule of thumb to remember is to plant them twice the depth of their own length.
Harvest season
It’s time to dig up any of your left-over Summer cops, such as runner beans and root vegetables. Vegetables that can be harvested into Winter, such as brussel sprouts, cabbages and cauliflowers can be left to continue growing.
Rake your lawn
An easily overlooked task is raking leaves from your lawn, it’s an incredibly important task as any leaves left on your lawn can actually damage the grass.
Protect your plants
With cold chills on their way, it’s really important to protect your plants from any frost by covering them appropriately.
